Homebrew beer styles, recipes and calculators
Hacer Cerveza Casera is a homebrewing site from Spain. Here you have, in English, our guide to the 127 beer styles of the BJCP 2021 guidelines, 34 all-grain recipes with every number, and five calculators for the math of brew day. Metric and US units throughout.
Beer styles
Every BJCP style with its history, its numbers and how to brew it. A few to start with:
All-grain recipes
- BJCP 18B · American Pale AleBeginner American Pale Ale5.3% · 38 IBU · 8 SRM · OG 1.052Clean, hoppy and easy to nail. It forgives small mash mistakes and is a good way to learn to control fermentation.
- BJCP 21A · American IPAAmerican IPA6.9% · 55 IBU · 7 SRM · OG 1.065Dry and bitter, with a tropical, resinous aroma that jumps out of the glass. Lots of hops at the end of the boil and in the fermenter.
- BJCP 15B · Irish StoutIrish Stout4.2% · 33 IBU · 30 SRM · OG 1.042Black, dry and light, with the bitter coffee of roasted barley and a creamy head. Less alcohol than it looks.
- BJCP 10A · WeissbierWeissbier5.3% · 12 IBU · 4 SRM · OG 1.052The Bavarian wheat beer: hazy, with a big head and banana and clove aromas that come from the yeast, not from fruit.
- BJCP 13C · English PorterEnglish Porter4.8% · 32 IBU · 23 SRM · OG 1.049Dark brown, with chocolate, caramel and a gentle roast, without the sharpness of a stout. Low carbonation, the English way.
- BJCP 24A · WitbierWitbier5.0% · 16 IBU · 4 SRM · OG 1.048The Belgian white beer: pale, hazy and refreshing, with raw wheat, coriander and bitter orange peel.
Brewing calculators
- ABV CalculatorEnter your gravity before and after fermentation and it tells you how much alcohol your beer has and how much work the yeast has done.
- IBU CalculatorAdd each hop with its weight, alpha acids and boil time, and it gives you the recipe's IBU and which styles it fits.
- Beer Color CalculatorEnter the weight and color (EBC) of each malt and it shows you what color your beer will be, in EBC and SRM, and which styles share that color.
- Priming Sugar CalculatorIt tells you how many grams of priming sugar you need to bottle carbonate, based on the volume, the temperature the beer fermented at and the carbonation the style calls for.
- Mash & Sparge Water CalculatorIt tells you how much water to heat for the mash and the sparge, how much wort you should collect before the boil and how hot your strike water should be.
The style statistics come from the BJCP 2021 Beer Style Guidelines; the descriptions and recipes are our own, written in Spanish and translated. The rest of the site (brewing guides, gear and the blog) is only in Spanish for now, and so are user accounts (English accounts are coming soon): hacercervezacasera.com.
